FAQs
How does GenderDX’s Prenatal Gender DNA Test work?
Even from the earliest stages of pregnancy small amounts of DNA from the fetus travel across the placenta and circulate in the mother's blood. We use exquisitely sensitive DNA detection methodologies to analyse this foetal DNA to determine whether or not it contains male-specific "Y chromosomal" DNA fragments. If these are detected, the foetus is confirmed to be male. Our methodologies have been independently verified in several clinical studies that have investigated thousands of pregnant women and found an accuracy rate in determining gender of >99%. We are so confident of the accuracy of our test, all results come with a full money-back guarantee.
How early in pregnancy can GenderDX’s Prenatal Gender DNA Test be used?
Our GenderDX test is the earliest non-invasive prenatal DNA test on the market. It can be taken at 7 weeks gestational age, which corresponds to around 9 weeks after the first day of your last menstrual period. We strongly recommend you do not take the test before this date as we cannot guarantee accuracy at earlier gestational ages.
Use our handy calculator below to determine your exact eligibility date based on either the first day of your last menstrual period or the babies due date if this has been estimated by your health professional:
How do I collect the sample? Do I need to visit a doctor or require a prescription? Is it painful?
Sample collection is easy. You don’t need to visit a doctor or collection centre or require a prescription - GenderDX is a direct-to-consumer DNA test that can be done at home in a few minutes using our home sample collection kit. Even better, we’ve teamed up with SeventhSense Biosystems to bring their revolutionary TAP painless blood collection technology to our home testing kits. No needles, painful blood collection or finger pricks are required – simply attach the TAP device to your upper arm and press the button, and using microfluidics technology it will automatically draw a small blood sample from just under the skin via microchannels in the device. Then just ship it back to us by regular mail for DNA analysis, and the results are automatically emailed to you. Easy!
How accurate is GenderDX’s Prenatal Gender DNA Test?
Our methodologies have been independently verified in several clinical studies that have investigated thousands of pregnant women and found an accuracy rate in determining gender of >99%. We are so confident of the accuracy of our test, all results come with a full money-back guarantee.
How long does testing take?
Once we receive your sample testing is completed in just 2-5 business days, after which the results are immediately email to you. We also offer an Express Testing Service (which can be requested from our ordering page) in which testing is completed in as little as 24-48 hours.
Does the GenderDX Prenatal Gender DNA Test replace an Ultrasound?
No. This test does not replace an Ultrasound. Ultrasounds are important for monitoring the health of the baby during pregnancy. Our test is a service and makes no medical or health claims.
Can the GenderDX Prenatal Gender DNA Test detect foetal or genetic abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome, aneuploidy, or other medical conditions?
Currently we only offer prenatal gender DNA testing. Our clinical research laboratory is performing testing and optimisation of additional non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPT) that we aim to offer in the near future in conjunction with genetic counselling services, however the roll-out schedule has yet to be finalised.
Can I use the test if I have a multiple birth pregnancy?
Yes you may use the GenderDX’s Prenatal Gender DNA Test if you are expecting twins or a multiple pregnancy. However, since the test reports only a single result, it will determine whether you are having at least one boy or only girls.
What happens if the test generates an incorrect result?
In the unlikely event of a false result, we can either provide a free retest or a full refund. For a refund you would just need to provide proof of the false result (such as an prenatal amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) report that shows the gender, or a birth certificate) and we immediately provide a full refund.
What precautions do I need to take during blood collection to ensure the result is accurate?
Rare incorrect results are almost always due to accidental adult male DNA contamination of the blood sample during collection resulting in a false “boy” result. To avoid this, always follow the test kit instructions carefully, particularly taking care never to have a male assist with blood collection or handle the blood collection tube or TAP device once they have been removed from their sterile packaging. Provided these simple precautions are followed, the test result should be accurate.
